Atalanta and Liverpool will renew their rivalry three-and-a-half years on from their last encounter in the Europa League quarter-final. Here’s Sports Mole’s preview of their meeting at Stadio Di Bergamo.
ATLANTA XI: Musso; Djimsiti, Hien and Kolasinac; Hateboer De Roon Zappacosta Koopmeiners Miranchuk Scamacca. Substitutions: Cody Gakpo Endo Mac Allister Nunez
Liverpool (4-3-3)
Liverpool will aim to overcome their first leg deficit against Plymouth Argyle at Anfield and advance into the League Cup final for a second consecutive time thanks to Jurgen Klopp’s strategic rotation policy.
The German coach will likely stick with the 4-3-3 formation which has proven so effective so far, meaning Trent Alexander-Arnold and Ibrahima Konate should begin in central defender roles while Andy Robertson and Virgil Van Dijk may play on either flank.
Klopp will field Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch as midfield depth players, with Dominik Szoboszlai starting as advanced number 10. Up front, Mohamed Salah will be joined by Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz with Diogo Jota being assessed due to injury concerns. A victory would cement Liverpool’s place atop Group D.
Alexander-Arnold
Even after conceding two goals against Atalanta at Anfield in the first leg, Liverpool still have a realistic chance at overturning this quarter-final deficit. Diogo Jota and Trent Alexander-Arnold returned to training this week and Jurgen Klopp hinted he may select both players for this game.
Liverpool made one change from their first leg with only Ibrahima Konate replacing Jarell Quansah on defence; Dominik Szoboszlai and Cody Gakpo both joining in midfield; Joe Gomez, Harvey Elliott and Kostas Tsimikas all making returns to Klopp’s matchday squad.
Konate
Ibrahima Konate will return to Anfield as Arne Slot makes just one change from their 5-0 victory over West Ham, joining Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold as part of Liverpool’s defensive trio.
Konate made an immediate impact in his debut season for Liverpool, starting the Carabao Cup final shootout win against Chelsea at Wembley last year and also as an accomplished pass player who can aid the attack when involved. He is one of our key versatile defenders – making an impressionful first season debut on Merseyside and going on to start all 17 matches of last season’s Carabao Cup campaign with us as an integral member.
He scored in that match and could be deployed as an advanced option against Tottenham. Curtis Jones and Ryan Gravenberch form the midfield, while Alexis Mac Allister, Jarell Quansah and Dominik Szoboszlai are available as subs off the bench.
Van Dijk
Virgil Van Dijk should retain his place at centre back despite having one goal to overturn in this EFL Cup semi-final second leg, after helping Liverpool dismantle Tottenham Hotspur 7-0 last time out and appear set to reach another Wembley final this year.
Ibrahima Konate will make his Premier League debut as right-back, taking over for Conor Bradley who is injured and unavailable, who left them short at right back. Ibrahima will likely be called upon to shut out Tottenham’s lively attack from within their own half for most of the game.
Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister will keep their positions in midfield, while Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez continue as subs on the bench. Liverpool will field Mohamed Salah on the right wing while Cody Gakpo remains on the left, as Luis Diaz remains their central option.
Robertson
The Reds will look to maintain their strong European form and book their place in the semi-finals. Unfortunately, however, due to Conor Bradley’s injury sustained against Crystal Palace Jurgen Klopp is likely to rest some key players and allow him to recover fully before continuing their campaign.
Gasperini will have almost an entirely fit squad to select from for Sunday’s match against Napoli, with only Giorgio Scalvini suffering a hamstring issue keeping him out. Midfielder Charles De Ketelaere returned after recovering from a groin injury while Liverpool transfer target Teun Koopmeiners will play a pivotal role for the hosts.
Klopp makes three changes for this game, replacing Alexander-Arnold, Van Dijk and Robertson with Diogo Jota, Harvey Elliott and Cody Gakpo; Mohamed Salah and Luis Diaz remain on the bench. Turkish referee Meler will oversee proceedings while Alper Ulusoy will act as VAR.
Elliott
After suffering an embarrassing 2-2 draw against Manchester United on Sunday, Liverpool will look to move past it and find redemption against Atalanta in their Europa League quarter-final first leg match. While Jurgen Klopp may have some injury concerns with Diogo Jota, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Alisson Becker possible options to feature; Ibrahima Konate, Joe Gomez Curtis Jones Harvey Elliott are other names who could begin. Teenage midfielder Stefan Bajcetic may also return gradually into team training but this may take time as well.
Expect Wataru Endo and Alexis Mac Allister to start in midfield, while teenage striker Cody Gakpo may join Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah up front for Liverpool in attack. Jurgen Klopp is expected to field an aggressive side for what will likely be their final European night at Anfield.
Mac Allister
Atalanta and Liverpool will meet for the first time ever in this competition. Atalanta advanced after dispatching Cesena 6-1 in their previous round; Liverpool easily defeated Manchester City 4-1 at home in theirs.
Reds will look to increase their lead over Arsenal with six points at stake and one game remaining, although Darwin Nunez may miss out in favour of either Diogo Jota or Cody Gakpo in advanced midfield roles.
Kostas Tsimikas will look to secure his starting left-back spot following his underwhelming display against Dorset, while Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister aim to control midfield. Dominik Szoboszlai should provide vital cover from right wing.
Salah
Mohamed Salah will look to continue his impressive form after scoring against Tottenham last week, alongside Luis Diaz. Cody Gakpo will remain his left back alongside Luis Diaz in attack.
Atalanta defender Giorgio Scalvini remains out with a hamstring problem, but manager Filippo Gasperini still has almost an entirely fit squad to choose from. Charles De Ketelaere should retain his spot on the bench while reported Liverpool target Teun Koopmeiners will likely feature as part of Atalanta’s midfield unit.
Liverpool defender Caoimhin Kelleher has made a recovery from a calf injury suffered against Palace, and should take his right-back spot alongside Ibrahima Konate. Additionally, Harvey Elliott and Kostas Tsimikas who both missed out due to injuries are back with them to boost Liverpool.
Nunez
Liverpool are still among the favorites to beat Tottenham Hotspur and reach Wembley Stadium for a second consecutive League Cup final appearance, even though they currently trail on aggregate by one goal. Without Trent Alexander-Arnold present, Alisson will lead their back four and become captain.
Left-back and advanced midfield positions are also up for grabs, with Kostas Tsimikas and Andy Robertson competing to fill one while Dominik Szoboszlai and Curtis Jones aim for the other. Slot also boasts options in attack with Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz competing for central roles while Darwin Nunez may get his chance from the bench.
Last weekend, Liverpool were held to a goalless draw by Brentford and will look for more goalscoring opportunities this time around, particularly up front where Mohamed Salah could join Cody Gakpo and Harvey Elliott in attacking for them.
Diaz
Virgil Van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold and other Liverpool defenders look set to maintain their places as they look for an eighth consecutive clean sheet. Diogo Jota missed training on Monday and remains uncertain for this game; Joe Gomez appears unlikely to feature.
Hansi Flick should stick to his rotation strategy, with Ryan Gravenberch returning alongside Alexis Mac Allister in central midfield. Frenkie de Jong will link with Gavi and Pedri, while Lewandowski should lead off his attack.
Charles De Ketelaere should provide backup to Mateo Retegui, the current Capocannoniere rankings leader. Isak Hien will continue in left-back duty while Gianluca Scamacca may return after recovering from injury. Odilon Kossounou and Ademola Lookman remain sidelined for the hosts while Giorgio Scalvini remains questionable with an injured shoulder; Sead Kolasinac and Ibrahima Konate should retain their places as defence players.
