Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) vs Mumbai Indians (MI)
Rain has cleared away and play is set to resume shortly. Umpires will conduct a ground inspection prior to toss-up.
KKR have lost both games this season, meaning they must win at least one more to make the playoffs. On Saturday they face Mumbai Indians again at Eden Gardens; last time, KKR won by 18 runs.
KKR are on course for victory as they hold a 95/4 lead after nine overs. MI appeared to have the upper hand but Chakaravarthy and Russell made some key breakthroughs to shift momentum away from them; even Shreyas Iyer’s quick 17-ball cameo couldn’t prevent their defeat.
Thushara First Delivery
Thushara begins his delivery with a wide ball. Salt cuts it to point and picks up an easy single before cutting back again for another single. Salt then takes the opportunity to push towards long off and misses out on an likely run-out attempt, pushing instead towards long off where a dot ball could have resulted in run out. Instead, lofting his ball to deep point for SIX!!!
Sunil Narine returned to the attack during the Powerplay. Kishan slashed Sunil Narine wide for four, then attempted a six which went over mid wicket before ultimately hitting it for four with a reverse hit off the final delivery of this over.
Thushara picked up two early wickets to exert pressure on MI. He caught Rohit off his bowler’s glove at slip, before dismissing Kishan with an inswinger for one run.
Bumrah enters the fray in the penultimate over. His first ball found its mark, hitting Rohit’s bat but being declared not out by umpires. Unfortunately, Bumrah then overstepped when pitching outside leg which allowed Rana to take an easy single run.
KKR won the toss and elected to bowl.
On Friday evening, the Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bangalore will face-off at Bengaluru’s iconic M. Chinnaswamy Stadium for 32 times, with KKR holding an edge over RCB with 16 victories against 14 for them in past encounters. This match won’t just be another game in the Indian Premier League: it will determine whether KKR can finally defeat their archrival or continue struggling at home against them.
KKR have an impressive bench strength and selection of quality players to draw upon, making them one of the more captivating teams in this year’s tournament. A win here would also secure their first-ever top-two finish and consequently qualify them automatically for playoffs.
Kolkata Knight Riders Bowling Performance
KKR bowlers had an outstanding performance as they limited Mumbai to just 170 runs on an unpredictable pitch. After taking three early wickets in the Powerplay, which caused quite an early scare among their batsmen, Suryakumar Yadav’s brilliant fifty and an outstanding cameo by Tim David saved them from embarrassment for now.
DC need to score 176 runs in 54 balls – an impossible feat that puts immense pressure on Rishabh Pant, currently batting on 20 off 6 balls with three sixes to his name.
Gautam Gambhir of KKR comes down for an interview after their victory against Delhi Capitals. He remarks on their long wait to win their third IPL title and particularly at Chepauk Stadium where they first did so back in 2012. Gambhir notes his great appreciation of being part of such an iconic franchise as well as being lucky to play for so long with them; further adding it was a fantastic team effort and they are extremely proud to achieve such an achievement together. Afterward, he thanks his teammates and fans alike for all of their support throughout this season!
KKR won the match by 24 runs.
KKR produced an impressive batting display against MI at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai to post a respectable total. Jasprit Bumrah and Nuwan Thushara bowled well to restrict MI’s batting order to only 169 runs in 19.5 overs, giving KKR their first win there in 12 years.
Thushara was swift in dismissing Raghuvanshi, Narine and Iyer in quick succession for an inauspicious start by the hosts, but Suryakumar Yadav’s impressive 56 helped steady their innings.
However, once their openers had left, KKR’s middle order collapsed under pressure. Piyush Chawla and Naman Dhir bowled two tidy overs to help the home side regain some control back. Angkrish attempted a big shot but missed it completely and was caught at deep mid wicket by Chawla’s bounced delivery that took off some edge off it – with this delivery Chawla eventually struck at middle stump with one that bounced a little before taking out its edge.
Manish Pandey and Venkatesh Iyer came to the rescue of KKR as they steadily built partnerships to push their total up to an respectable total – adding 72 runs off just 52 balls! Unfortunately it wasn’t enough to give KKR the advantage they needed for victory.
In the final over, many dot balls were struck; and it was KKR who managed to squeeze one more run out of the final ball to seal victory by 24 runs.
KKR have moved up the table, now holding 14 points from nine matches. Their next match against Bengaluru at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium should prove decisive.
Mumbai Indians appear all but out of playoff contention now. They require many more favorable results in their remaining matches to make the top four, yet still hope to play spoilsport in the final leg of this season. In this match, KKR batsmen came out swinging like never before as they scored 85 runs in the Power-play. Salt and Narine led KKR’s run scoring, both hitting two fours and five sixes apiece to leave RCB reeling with surprise while giving KKR total control of this match.

At the conclusion of their innings, KKR managed to complete with a respectable total of 204 runs in 20 overs. Narine played an instrumental role by picking up 2 wickets in their final over.
Narine steps up to bowl the final over and allows three fours in his first four balls, leaving RCB trailing by three runs with only three needed from one ball remaining. Karn Sharma was then caught and bowled by Starc for an exciting win by KKR.
Shreyas Iyer of KKR feels it was an outstanding team effort on both fronts. Their bowling was particularly impressive as they attempted to limit half-volleys and slow deliveries. Their batting performance rounded off an outstanding day. He advises his team members to remain focused in training so as to further hone their game; thanking their fans for supporting the team while promising that they will play with passion in future matches.
