Kolkata Knight Riders Vs Mumbai Indians Standings
Kolkata Knight Riders increased their chances of qualifying for the playoffs with an 18-run win against Mumbai Indians at Eden Gardens during a rain-affected match on Tuesday. Batting first, they made 157-7 before keeping off any visitors thanks to fast bowlers Piyush Chawla and Jasprit Bumrah who kept Mumbai at bay with quick deliveries.
MI will start with Ishan Kishan and Rohit Sharma (impact sub).
Points table
KKR are currently at the top of the points table with 9 wins and one loss, while MI are sitting ninth with four wins and five losses. Both teams will meet up again in their final matchup of this season on 11 May at Eden Gardens, Kolkata; the victor will secure an automatic playoff berth while its loser will be eliminated from contention altogether. Kickoff time for this contest will be at 7:30 pm.
Mumbai Indians lost to Kolkata Knight Riders at Wankhede Stadium during their last meeting at this ground and have only managed one victory there since Gautam Gambhir took control in 2012. They will hope that success may come their way this time.
On the other hand, KKR are on the cusp of qualifying for the playoffs and look set to finish top two in their league. After winning nine out of eleven matches they currently hold an eight-point advantage over Rajasthan Royals.
Teams Gujarat Titans and Royal Challengers Bengaluru will both aim to secure victory against one another on a batting-friendly pitch in Kolkata; however, due to recent rainfall that may have made the outfield soft; hence there may be chances that play may be curtailed or cancelled altogether.
Mumbai Indians made an aggressive start, propelled by Ishan Kishan’s swift 40 off 22 balls that propelled them to 65/0 in just 6.4 overs. But Narine turned the tables with his crafty bowling; dismissing Kishan with a perfectly disguised delivery and inciting a collapse of their batting lineup. Chakravarthy and Russell then picked up important wickets that helped restrict Mumbai to only 139/8 in 16 overs – Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya were both victims of Narine’s deceptive spin.
Matches played
Mumbai Indians won the 2024 IPL title after an inauspicious start, but managed to recover with nine victories out of their final ten league matches and an emphatic triumph against Super Kings in the final. Lendl Simmons, Rohit Sharma and Ambati Rayudu led their side with impressive batting performances while Malinga McClenaghan and Harbhajan Singh provided stellar bowling performances while youngster like Ishan Kishan and Romario Shepherd also proved instrumental.
“Korbo, Lorbo, Jeetbo” has been instrumental in their franchise’s success. Managed by Sourav Ganguly with Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri Khan acting as co-owners; purple and gold are their official colours and they boast an excellent head-to-head record against Kolkata Knight Riders; they won 71% of matches between them in Wankhede Stadium against them while losing eight out of ten at Wankhede.
In the opening match of the series, Mumbai batted first and scored 168/3 in 20 overs under captain Rohit Sharma who hit an amazing century off 14 balls; Kieron Pollard and Suryakumar Yadav were other key contributors for Mumbai Indians. In response, KKR reached their target in 15 overs before losing wickets at regular intervals.
Mumbai Indians still had hopes for a top-four finish by midway. After defeating Delhi Daredevils in their next match and moving ahead of Royal Challengers Bangalore in the table, they went on to win three straight matches to move up into fourth position – but an unexpected defeat by KKR meant they missed out on playoff eligibility.
KKR can practically secure a top-two finish with a win against Mumbai on Saturday night, offering them the opportunity to test out some new players while giving Anshul Kamboj more playing time, who should make an immediate impactful contribution in this match.
Matches won
Kolkata Knight Riders have been impressive thus far in the Indian Premier League 2024, winning nine out of their 12 matches and narrowly missing out on playoff qualification last season. If they want a top two finish, all remaining matches must be won – next up against Mumbai Indians at Wankhede Stadium this Friday.
Rain delayed and reduced the match to 16 overs a side, yet still proved captivating. KKR set Mumbai an target of 158 to chase, helped by Nitish Rana’s impressive 23-ball 33 off 23 deliveries he shared with Venkatesh Iyer before both were run out. But Mumbai’s pace bowlers led by Jasprit Bumrah took wickets at regular intervals with Piyush Chawla also playing an instrumental role with two wickets claimed during three overs of bowling from three overs.
Mumbai Indians have had a disappointing season so far, but still have time to restore some pride with some successful performances in their remaining games. Their batting has been one of their major weaknesses but hopefully can improve during upcoming matches against Delhi Daredevils and Royal Challengers Bangalore.
KKR are undefeated so far in this tournament and currently in second place. Boasting top players such as Andre Russell and Gautam Gambhir, they have proven they can compete with some of the top teams. If KKR can maintain this form throughout their remaining matches, they could become formidable contenders come playoff time; their official motto being “Korbo Lorbo Jeetbo” (“Perform, Fight, Win”). It will be intriguing to see whether they can continue this form in remaining matches; if so it may surprise many observers and secure top two finish in league standings – for all other teams it’s now time to start preparing for final stage competition!
Matches lost
After an inauspicious start, Kolkata Knight Riders managed to rally from behind and beat Mumbai Indians by 24 runs during a rain-affected game at Eden Gardens. This victory helped maintain their second place position on the IPL 2024 points table while keeping within striking distance of securing a playoff berth – both teams now having nine matches remaining in this season.
Due to inclement weather conditions, both teams struggled in the early stages of their innings. Sunil Narine and Varun Chakaravarthy helped KKR recover with an outstanding partnership – they shared three wickets between them while Harshit Rana and Andre Russell added one each for Harshit Rana.
MI’s batsmen initially struggled in their first ten overs, falling quickly from 57/6 to 150/5 by the 20th over. Tilak Varma and Andre Russell provided strong rearguard support that saw MI move from that position back up. Unfortunately for MI though, Piyush Chawla broke that partnership by bowling an exceptional spell that saw two key wickets taken off Phil Salt (42 off 21 balls) and Andre Russell. Jasprit Bumrah and Manish Pandey also contributed two wickets each.
Ishan Kishan and Rohit Sharma were expected to open the batting for the visitors, while Angkrish Raghuvanshi, Suyash Sharma, Mohammad Nabi, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Nehal Wadhera and Vaibhav Arora would provide impact subs.
Mumbai won the toss and elected to field. Their batsmen struggled during the first ten overs, with Mohammad Nabi and Rahmanullah Gurbaz contributing some big runs, leading them to reach 168/3 in 16 overs – setting off an intense chase from KKR that ultimately resulted in their miraculous win against Rajasthan Royals; should they defeat Rajasthan, they would advance further in competition while losing will lead them out entirely.
