Mumbai Indians vs Lucknow Super Giants
Mumbai Indians suffered another setback to their chances of making it to the playoffs when they fell to Lucknow Super Giants by 18 runs at Wankhede Stadium on Friday. Nicholas Pooran scored an astonishing 75 off 29 balls to guide LSG to an emphatic 20-over total of 214/6 against Mumbai Stoinis’s 67 off 49 balls as LSG set off on their mission against them. But Nicholas Pooran wasn’t to be denied; LSG cruised home by 9 runs.
Rohit Sharma, captain of Mumbai Indians (MI), believes they possess the talent necessary to finish in the top four this season and is optimistic about how young batsmen have responded after being given key roles this time around.
With only two matches remaining in the tournament, both sides will be eager to secure their spots among the top four. Therefore, this match-up will be key for both teams, and any negative result could derail their campaigns significantly.
LSG sit fifth on the points table with five wins out of nine matches played this season and have recently taken both their road matches by storm. Meanwhile, MI sit ninth with just three victories out of their nine home matches this season.
Both teams possess powerful bowling attacks, but the weather could play a pivotal role in this matchup. The pitch should be dry, which should provide favorable conditions for batsmen; light drizzle might even occur early on but should gradually dissipate throughout the day as more is observed by satellite imagery. Winning the toss will give one team an edge in this contest;
MI vs LSG
Mumbai Indians relied on Ishan Kishan and Nehal Wadhera’s careful batting to post a competitive total after early wickets fell, however they eventually succumbed to spinner Piyush Chawla (3/29) and Sri Lankan pacer Nuwan Thushara (3/28). Nicholas Pooran led Lucknow with an outstanding 75-ball century!
LSG now look to secure a play-off spot against Delhi Daredevils in the 2024 IPL season, after Rohit Sharma and Dewald Brevis began aggressively scoring 53 runs in 10 overs for MI in their powerplay innings. Unfortunately they soon left and were replaced with Ishan Kishan and Naman Dhir who struggled badly during middle overs batting to reach their target of 268 runs – this ultimately lead to collapse that resulted in LSG falling far short of this mark.
Rohit Sharma has been caught at deep backward square leg by Ravi Bishnoi from Krunal Pandya’s bowling. Rohit was trying to sweep a ball off his pads but instead found itself straight into Bishnoi’s hands at deep backward square leg.
Krunal then bowled a full delivery to Ishan, who attempted to play a scoop shot but missed and was stumped off it. Ishan appealed for an lbw decision but unfortunately for MI it was given as wide and they lost another wicket.
Ishan Kishan and Nehal Wadhera provided stability to their innings by adding 43 runs over five overs, but after this the visitors lost more wickets quickly with Mohammad Nabi taking an outstanding catch at deep midwicket off Krunal Pandya to dismiss Ishan Kishan for just four runs off Krunal Pandya before Krunal Pandya caught Nicholas Pooran caught behind for golden duck, followed by Mohammad Nabi dismissing Rohit Sharma for ducking followed by Rohit for 20 and Dewald Brevis for 23.
Mumbai vs Lucknow
Mumbai Indians team was initially nervous when faced with the challenge of chasing down 214 runs but gradually built momentum throughout their innings thanks to Nicholas Pooran and KL Rahul’s powerful batting performances, along with Krunal Pandya and Krunal Pandya’s bowlers doing an outstanding job despite not getting many early wickets.
At last, they achieved their target easily and confidently. This victory gives them much-needed boost ahead of the playoffs; currently 3rd on the table with two points from 14 games and an opportunity to secure one of four playoff spots.
LSG won the toss and elected to bowl first, successfully restricting their visitors’ score to an acceptable total of 196 thanks largely to Nicholas Pooran’s impressive 75 run performance from 29 balls he batted with; Nuwan Thushara and Piyush Chawla took three wickets each to help keep their opponents score low.
Rohit Sharma made an early statement of intent with a quick six through the covers before dancing down the track to loft a maximum over long off for another six – pushing his score past 200 with ease.
Dewald Brevis quickly moved across and pulled it all the way over deep midwicket for an unbeaten SIX to put Mumbai into a strong position as they only trail by 18 runs.
Mohsin Khan bowls a slower ball that is fuller and outside off stump, leaving it alone and earning himself a single run.
LSG need to keep their run rate growing if they want to make any breakthrough into the playoffs. They must ensure they don’t lose wickets and continue batting well like in this game, while improving their fielding in death overs as there were several slip ups during this match.
Final Score
Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai hosted this game, and Lucknow Super Giants were victorious by 18 runs to win their sixth win of the season against Mumbai Indians – also improving their record to 5 wins against 3 defeats; further improving their position on the points table; while Mumbai Indians suffered their seventh defeat and now had no chance of making playoffs.
The initial over was rather modest with only nine runs being scored, but then LSG surged forward in the second over and took 11 runs from it before collecting another 10.
At the end of it all, neither side had an easy chase but the hosts showed great spirit to eventually secure a six-wicket win and their sixth of the season. Their bowlers provided them with a solid platform which they maintained throughout.
Nicholas Pooran led off for the home side with 75 off 29 balls, joined in his innings by KL Rahul who hit two sixes and two fours before reaching fifty by smashing consecutive sixes off Arjun Tendulkar.
Rahul was eventually dismissed by Piyush Chawla in the 18th over, just short of reaching 100 runs. On a short delivery he attempted to hit over long-off but instead got caught by Nehal Wadhera instead.
The final over of LSG’s innings proved challenging for both sides. While Rohit and Marcus Stoinis initially struck early singles for LSG, bowlers soon took control and started taking wickets to keep pace.
Naveen-ul-Haq started off strong, before Mohsin Khan, Tim David and Krunal Pandya all contributed with wickets as the match ended with an exciting 18-run win for their hosts.
