England have shown they can dominate possession so far. Bellingham beats Ilic and attempted to place in a cross, which unfortunately came too close for England’s goalkeeper to control.

Serbia press up near the edge of their box, but Walker and Rice cannot find a comfortable position with their feet and thus the threat is neutralized.

First half

England are dominating early, delighting their fans at Veltins Arena. Southgate has made changes and his new lineup seems to be fitting well; Bellingham may have even earned himself a late foul from Vlahovic, although referee Robert Lechler waved play on.

Milinkovic-Savic attempted to feed Vlahovic with an early through ball, but Bellingham was there to stop it. Serbia were enjoying sustained possession but Three Lions defence held strong.

Trippier successfully defends against Mladenovic for possession before stretching to hold his line as Mitrovic attempted a tackle from behind. From left back position, Arsenal defender then sends in a cross that narrowly misses its target by inches.

Saka attempts to reach Rice but his effort ends up with a goal kick. Although Saka had an impressive debut appearance for Arsenal, he may struggle for starting spots among more experienced members of his team.

Foden takes charge and dribbles in to find Bellingham in an advantageous area of the pitch; unfortunately he shoots narrowly wide. Another beautiful move begins with Alexander-Arnold sending in a crossfield pass which leads to Foden taking control of dribbling for him to find Bellingham; unfortunately he shoots narrowly wide.

Long wait as Alexander-Arnold, Foden and Bellingham work in unison; unfortunately for Manchester City’s winger he can’t keep the ball under control as he attempts to play into Bellingham’s fast striker.

Kane was challenged by Ilic and fell, earning England a free-kick from Foden’s set piece that reached Saka but his header was blocked by Rajkovic of Serbia keeper Rajkovic was looking nervous as his team were being pinned back into their own half by Southgate who tried to shore up his midfield by replacing Alexander-Arnold with Conor Gallagher before possibly making any additional adjustments before halftime but no changes came before that! England are up by one goal at halftime after an outstanding effort from all players and particularly from their defenders who held well despite some pretty aggressive tactics from Serbia! Great work from everyone involved as the whole team has done well against some pretty rough tactics by both teams’ sides

Second half

Fans are singing out ‘God Save the King!’ as England take to the field for the second half. Serbian players appear drained after their exertions in the first half and England appears to have gained control of possession; but any mistakes could prove costly for England.

Mitrovic was an ever-present threat for Serbs but his run into the box resulted in him colliding with Trippier and falling to the floor, prompting a penalty claim from Mitrovic – something Mr Orsato denied without much fuss.

England have the chance to extend their lead, but can’t escape their own half. Milinkovic-Savic attempts a low pass meant for Jovic, but the Liverpool striker fails to catch it and it rolls away from play.

Southgate makes an unconventional move, replacing Saka with Bowen. Though this change could prove risky defensively, Southgate could feel that going for energy on the counterattack would provide him with what he needs to succeed in his game plan.

But England’s possession doesn’t last long. A bouncing ball lands on the left and Guehi unleashes a sliding tackle to take out Vlahovic. Guehi must clear off his line as Gudelj attempts to shoot from outside of the area.

Another corner for the hosts comes to nothing, while at the other end a long ball from Bellingham finds Saka, who lays it low across the area but Foden was too far behind it to react in time.

As both teams press high up the pitch, both are increasing the tempo of play and pressing hard for control of possession. Soon enough, Milinkovic-Savic launches an immediate Serbian break and fires in a cross that almost hits Vlahovic, but unfortunately he cannot reach it in time.

England are looking to regain control of the game, but Gudelj’s poor challenge gives away a free-kick for Serbia. Unfortunately for England though, Pickford deflected off it wide. Another corner followed but couldn’t reach danger zone either.

Third quarter

Gareth Southgate’s side are dominating possession, while fans at Veltins Arena are making themselves heard. A free-kick is awarded to England just outside Serbian box, and Alexander-Arnold takes it. However, his delivery was too far out for it to hit anyone in danger and sails harmlessly away.

Serbian players are suddenly looking dangerous. Mladenovic bursts forward down the left flank and squares towards Mitrovic who falls to his knees claiming for a penalty claim; yet no penalty kick is awarded to England despite remaining within their own half. England must remain cautious.

Bellingham and Rice coordinate an effective passing move, leading Rice into shooting space from 12 yards out. He fires off an attempt but Rajkovic manages to save effectively.

Both teams are pressing hard for chances, while any errors could prove costly for England if mistakes arise; but, overall, they are keeping possession and looking dangerous at both ends of the field.

Serbian Milinkovic-Savic attempts a long shot from distance but misses. Teammate Vlahovic also takes aim but doesn’t hit his target either.

Referee Mauro Calleja orders a substitution by Serbia as Zivkovic is replaced with Veljko Birmancevic in order to try and gain more footing in the game; unfortunately it’s not working out well so far for them.

England are awarded a free-kick on the edge of the box and quickly work it from Foden back to Stones before Kane attempted to dance his way past Ilic, only for him to be taken down and be awarded a yellow card by Ilic. England recycle the ball and try again; Foden finds space on the right wing but his low cross was turned away from goal by one defender before hitting an attempted shot from just outside the area that appears headed in but was blocked by another body, leaving Foden frustrated by what had transpired – leading up to an extra minute added time being shown at Gelsenkirchen.

Fourth quarter

As they move into the final quarter of this tense match, England are under immense pressure. They have only managed three shots on target in total and lost 55% possession during the first half. They are defending deep while looking to break on the counterattack but they are having difficulty getting ball into their attacking third and losing possession cheaply; an alarming trend for Gareth Southgate’s squad.

Guehi made an outstanding tackle to deny Vlahovic on the left when Serbia looked to create an opening, before England won a free-kick in an unsafe area and Kane won the header but his effort was blocked by Guehi – clearly changing the pattern of play and giving more ball control to Serbia than before.

Foden rushes the ball into England’s final third and attempts to set up Rice on his left, but cannot find enough space. England have an opportunity for breakthrough, but their possession is lost quickly as Foden becomes offside when breaking into the box.

The hosts still possess a slim lead over their opponents at Arena AufSchalke; however, that hasn’t stopped them from pressing for an equaliser with cheers of encouragement from their home crowd at every touch and pass from their team.

Rajkovic makes another great save as he dives to stop Kane from scoring from close range, then is called upon again as the Serbs press forward with their attack.

England still have one last chance to break through England’s resolute defensive display and they win another corner which Kane fails to take advantage of before trying to play in Alexander-Arnold, but instead his long ball goes wide.
