The match was an unforgettable exhibition of exceptional cricket, with highlights provided by legendary players like Rohit Sharma, Kane Williamson and Jasprit Bumrah.
New Zealand will aim to take control of the three-match series and win the second Test in Pune by making three changes, with Shubman Gill back into their side while in-form batsman Sarfaraz Khan remaining.
Jasprit Bumrah
Jasprit Bumrah has been India’s most effective bowler this series. Playing only his third Test match, the fast bowler has taken three wickets at an average of 14.50 without conceding a boundary to India’s opponents.
Bumrah stands out among bowlers as an adept practitioner of late swing. Although his bowling action may seem unconventional, he still manages to generate good pace with his nagging lengths and clever variations, along with his compact release point that makes his deliveries difficult for batsmen to read.
He was on the cusp of being selected for India when an injury sidelined him for four and a half months, but made up for lost time by becoming Gujarat’s second-highest wicket-taker in Ranji Trophy and earning Vijay Hazare Trophy honours in domestic cricket.
He is an exceptional fielder, taking fantastic catches and contributing significantly with his running between the wickets – qualities which saw him recognised by being named to the ICC Men’s T20I Team of the Year 2021-22.
Mumbai Indians star Rohit Sharma should retain his spot for the second Test against New Zealand starting Thursday at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. He will compete against Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant for No. 5, but failed to impress during his debut innings of scores of 0 and 12 during that matchup in Bengaluru.
Trent Boult
New Zealand cricket team is widely recognised as being among the most formidable teams in international cricket, reaching finals of several major ICC tournaments. Best known for their record-breaking batting performances led by Trent Boult, they also boast an effective fast bowling attack to complement them.
John Pamment, Boult’s Northern Districts coach, praises Boult for having an exceptional wrist position, which allows him to control high speeds with precision and maintain control at high speeds. Boult works very well alongside partner Tim Southee; together they have become New Zealand’s main wicket-taking pairing in recent times; in 2014 alone they shared almost half of New Zealand’s wickets – 67 to be exact!
Boult led all wicket takers at the 2015 ICC World Cup with 17 scalps and is now eighth fastest to 200 Test wickets for New Zealand bowlers. Additionally he excels as an outstanding fielder while possessing an ability to strike key wickets in big matches.
He boasts extensive experience across all forms of cricket and was instrumental in New Zealand capturing T20 World Cup 2024. In total he has featured in over 150 one-day internationals and 100 T20Is for New Zealand.
Boult will look to continue his fine form against India in the upcoming T20 series. After being traded from Delhi to Mumbai Indians prior to the 2020 season of IPL, he played an instrumental role in their winning title and claimed 25 wickets during that season while posting an outstanding bowling average compared to any Indian player participating. Furthermore, four maiden overs were bowled by him – more than any player in league that year!
Kane Williamson
Williamson is an intelligent and technically-sound batsman capable of taking on lethal pace attacks as well as quality spinners. The current New Zealand Test captain is widely considered one of the four or five greatest batsmen worldwide and boasts two consecutive streaks of five or more fifty-plus scores in ODIs. Furthermore, Williamson can play either at gully or slip.
Black Caps skipper Ross Taylor has proven himself an effective leader, leading his side through many successful campaigns since Brendon McCullum retired from international cricket in 2016. Taylor became full-time captain after Brendon McCullum retired in 2016, his inaugural tournament as captain being at the T20 World Cup where his side advanced all the way to a semi-final against India – making them only third team ever to reach such an achievement on home turf.
New Zealand was expected to easily overcome England in the finals, yet were unable to break through their hosts’ defense and ultimately lost in a Super Over. Williamson donated all his match fee towards helping victims of Peshawar school massacre.
Williamson led New Zealand’s batting against India. His batsman Devon Conway also contributed an excellent 91 run and helped set a good total for the Kiwis to chase, however, Bumrah and Siraj’s bowling performance put India under immense pressure; their bowling was consistently hitting batters outside their strike zones while Bumrah got the breakthrough by trapping Conway lbw.
Ross Taylor
New Zealand and India played out an epic first Test that will live long in the memory of cricket fans across the nation, but rain interrupted proceedings before Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill made outstanding contributions for India, but New Zealand bowlers held them back from amassing huge totals; Trent Boult and Lockie Ferguson’s early breakthroughs proved crucial in keeping India at bay.
New Zealand batsmen did not face too many difficulties on a pitch that favoured spinners and managed to defend against new ball delivery, although they also had to contend with unpredictable weather, with numerous rain breaks during their innings.
New Zealand captain Tom Latham won the toss and elected to bat. He was well supported by Kane Williamson who helped anchor their innings. Together they put on a 136-run partnership before Virat Kohli was finally dismissed off on his last ball of the day.
Ross Taylor made an important contribution in the second innings. An integral part of New Zealand’s squad, Ross is set to compete at World Cup 2019. After having endured an unfortunate World Cup 2007 and struggling for runs during 2015 he has since been an outstanding performer.
New Zealand are expected to make some adjustments for their four-match series against India in Pune, including dropping one or both fast bowlers (Tim Southee or Will O’Rourke) in order to add an extra spinner like Ish Sodhi or Mitchell Santner, or replacing underperforming wicketkeeper Kane Williamson with an additional specialist batsman. It will be an important series for both sides, as the winner could qualify for the World Test Championship final.
Tom Latham
New Zealand batsmen have shown great resilience after an inauspicious start against Indian bowlers. But their challenge remains difficult – India’s formidable batting lineup and versatile bowling attack will likely provide plenty of excitement during Pune.
Tom Latham is an outstanding left hand opening batsman for the Blackcaps who excels at stroke play. Hailing from Canterbury and son of former Blackcap Rod Latham, this Kiwi opener can play across all three formats and is also an adept wicket-keeper. A consistent performer, Latham can bat anywhere in the batting order while being used as wicket keeper if needed.
As the leading run scorer for the BLACKCAPS at the 2019 ICC World Cup, he was an outstanding performer for New Zealand. After making his Test debut at age 21, he quickly established himself as an integral member of their squad; and is relied upon by them at the top of their order as an essential piece.
Since returning to India after 36-years’ absence, he’s been instrumental in leading New Zealand back from 36-years’ of futile tours there. With two fifties under his belt he will look to continue this form against Men in Blue.
India and New Zealand will hold their second test match of their three-match series on Thursday morning at MCA Stadium, Pune at 4 AM GMT. India will look to rebound after their loss at Bengaluru; however, another defeat would give New Zealand an early edge in this three-game series.
