South Africa defeated Bangladesh by seven wickets at Mirpur to take an early advantage in their two-match series, defeating them 7-0 with Kagiso Rabada taking six wickets as South Africa chased down their target of 106 before lunch on day four of play.
Towhid Hridoy’s superb 37 off 34 balls gave Bangladesh hope until Aiden Markram held up at long-on.
1st Innings
South Africa narrowly beat Bangladesh by four runs in their opening T20I match at New York on Monday. Chasing a target of 114 after Bangladesh collapsed to 106 all out, Kagiso Rabada, Wiaan Mulder, and Keshav Maharaj all took three wickets each for South Africa while Towhid Hridoy scored 37 off 34 balls for Bangladesh batting opener Towhid Hridoy led their run chase.
Early in the match, the visitors won the toss and elected to bat first – a decision which proved costly as they were reduced to only 106 runs by Kyle Verreynne’s unbeaten century and Mulder reaching his maiden Test half century. The Proteas then responded with 308 runs total; Kyle Verreynne hitting an unbeaten century while Mulder notched his maiden Test half century en route.
Aiden Markram will lead South Africa in this Test as regular Test captain Temba Bavuma remains injured; Aiden has led South Africa in 35 white-ball internationals so far but this marks his first Test stint.
As they attempted to defend their target, the home side faced the danger of being bowled out quickly for a low score; however, thanks to Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Nayeem Hasan’s excellent batsmanship they managed to remain in the innings through patient batting that frustrated South African bowlers; further helped by poor light and rain which prevented Proteas from using second new ball.
Mehidy Hasan Miraz narrowly missed scoring a Test century when his Rabada ball found Wiaan Mulder at third slip; nevertheless he led an inspiring resistance effort and managed to transform what could have been an embarrassing encounter into an engaging thriller. As the day concluded, both sides battled hard for victory but their hopes of success were ended when Towhid was caught lbw by Maharaj. Shakib Al Hasan now stands four wickets short of becoming all-time leading wicket-taker.
2nd Innings
South Africa displayed their dominance in their first Test against Bangladesh at Dhaka’s Shere Bangla National Stadium with a dominant performance that saw them win by seven wickets, their first win on Asian soil since 2014. Furthermore, this result improved South Africa’s standings in the ICC World Test Championship standings.
South African fast bowlers Kagiso Rabada and Keshav Maharaj were notable, each taking one wicket each. Unfortunately for their side though, due to poor light and rain the tourists struggled to build upon their early momentum; aiding this was bad light delaying play when taking on the second new ball.
Bangladesh batsmen put up an admirable fight, yet were unable to overcome a difficult target of 248 runs in the final session. Towhid Hridoy scored 37 not out but was still unable to give his team victory.
If the visitors want any chance of victory against South Africa, they will need to improve on their performance and avoid another collapse similar to what occurred against Sri Lanka in their first innings. Their batsmen must also remain confident enough against its quality attack.
Bangladesh will aim to win their inaugural Test match against South Africa after suffering all-out defeat previously in this longest format of play. They will rely on Nayeem Hasan and Mehidy Hasan’s experience for guidance as they make their bid. 3rd Innings
South Africa took control of this match before lunch at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium with ease thanks to some strong batting from Kyle Verreynne and Wiaan Mulder as Bangladesh collapsed quickly in their second innings, giving Kagiso Rabada six second-innings wickets for nine total. They cruised their way to victory before lunch.
Jaker Ali led Bangladesh’s incredible turnaround from 112-6 and levelled the first Test after an early warning with his outstanding 83-not out innings, creating a record 138-run partnership with Mehidy Hasan (87 not out), who battled through an extremely testing first session that was interrupted by rain and poor lighting conditions.
After an inauspicious start to their chase, Mehidy forged ahead to achieve his ninth Test half century from just 94 balls – hitting Dane Piedt for two sixes over mid-off and one through covers. Additionally, he hit Rabada three fours through fine leg and finished on 87 not out alongside Rabada as Bangladesh kept within striking distance.
Mehidy was caught behind on the fifth ball of the final over, seemingly signalling Bangladesh’s impending defeat, but Tristan Stubbs and Mohammad Shahzad made sure their late assault put them within striking distance of reaching their target, which they achieved easily with only 13 runs needed from two overs remaining for Bangladesh to reach their total.
The Proteas have won five of their last six Tests in Asia, ending a run of 14 losses that began with Sri Lanka Tour 2014 and continuing into Bangladesh Test win since 2014. Temba Bavuma will captain his side during a second Test match from Oct 29 – Nov 2 in Chattogram from Oct 29- Nov 2. South Africa have only managed one victory from 10 tests they’ve played against India; winning only once while losing nine times; they still have yet to defeat either Bangladesh or India on their journey towards appearing fourth ICC World Cup final appearance; so far. They hope final group games against Pakistan and West Indies can see change!
4th Innings
Kagiso Rabada took two wickets to help South Africa regain control in the opening Test against Bangladesh at Dhaka. But Bangladesh responded well in their second innings, setting up an exciting finish on day three as Bangladesh were 101-3 at play’s conclusion and trailed by 101 runs with eight wickets available to them.
South Africa opener Temba Bavuma will miss the first Test against Bangladesh due to an elbow injury, with Aiden Markram taking his place as captain despite having captained South Africa in 35 white-ball internationals prior to this debut as Test captain against Bangladesh. Additionally, Kyle Verreynne will fill one down slot while Dewald Brevis steps in at number four for South Africa in their absence.
Bangladesh made an impressive comeback on day 3 of their inaugural Test against South Africa thanks to Mehidy Hasan Miraz’s unbeaten 87. South Africa were then able to establish themselves by cleaning up their lower order, setting Bangladesh a modest target of 307 on an aiding surface.
Bangladesh’s top order endured a difficult Powerplay period to reach 29/1 at the halfway stage of their chase, but lost its momentum with Keshav Maharaj’s double strike which removed Litton Das for nine from 13 and Dane Piedt shortly thereafter. The tourists will hope their experience in Dhaka comes into play when play resumes Thursday morning.
South Africa’s batsmen saw off Bangladesh with ease on October 28, reaching their target within 22 overs to win by seven wickets in just under 22 overs – this will mark the first Test played in Bangladesh since Shakib Al Hasan decided not to travel due to security concerns. Now, South Africa move onto Chattogram for their next encounter starting October 29 – marking both Shakib’s maiden Test half century and an unprecedented 107 run stand with Kyle Verreynne as they reach their target by seven wickets on October 29. This will mark Shakib Al Hasan’s return after nine years away and also marks first time since Shakib opted not travel due to security concerns!
