India are in contention to take their three-match series against Bangladesh while Bangladesh would like a consolation victory before departing Chepauk. Here’s an update from Chepauk:
Najmul Shanto’s bat provides some resistance for Bangladesh but their spin twins have made easy work of her.
India vs Bangladesh Match Scorecard
India beat Bangladesh by 378 runs at Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in their three-match series. Bumrah claimed four wickets while Akash Deep, Siraj and Jadeja all picked up two each to put Bangladesh down for only 149 in just under three sessions after being put in to bat first.
Ayush Mhatre’s wicket broke the back of Bangladesh’s innings with a critical wicket and India have taken control of this match. At one stage, India were struggling at 144/6, looking set for an overly-complex total; but Ashwin transformed proceedings with brilliant stroke play, creating a vital 199-run partnership between him and Jadeja that turned the tide of play around completely.
Indian spin twins once again impressed in the middle overs by taking care of most of Bangladesh’s batting. For the first time ever both spinners recorded more than one wicket per over for India.
India are currently chasing an enormous target and must win this match to keep their momentum intact. Mustafizur Rahman will be key for Bangladesh as one of their best all-round batting all-rounders who enjoys making crucial contributions with the bat; Mustafizur excelled against Pakistan last time out and should do well once more here as well. Also playing will be Litton Das who could put pressure on opponents through his batting while Litton Das makes crucial contributions with the bat; both would like a quick start with litton Das looking forward to his debut test series appearance as this would be his maiden Test debut for his new country and will want to score quickly so as not lose momentum!
India batting first
After an arduous first day due to rain, India seized control on the second. Pacer Jasprit Bumrah and spinner Ravindra Jadeja bowled superbly as Bangladesh were restricted to just 146 runs against them.
India’s batsmen also excelled, with Sanju Samson and Hardik Pandya scoring fifties to keep the scoreboard ticking over. It was an outstanding display from such young sides; India appeared well positioned to claim victory.
After losing two wickets quickly – Mushfiqur Rahim being dismissed first and Litton Das shortly thereafter – things quickly took a turn for the worse for Pakistan.
Bangladesh desperately needed some momentum back if they wanted to remain competitive, yet were unable to break through an effective Indian attack and were eventually dismissed for just 139 runs in 37 overs.
Litton Das and Mohammad Shihab James put on a promising partnership of 41 runs for the fourth wicket; unfortunately, KP Karyhikeya then removed James in one over to preserve their chances of victory for their hosts.
Rain delayed this match for over an hour; but once resumed, India showed why they were clear favourites in this contest by making a rapid start – both openers making half centuries in just 10 overs!
Middle order batsmen then made key contributions, as did tailenders. India seemed set for an easy win when 297 runs were on the board, yet Bangladesh showed remarkable grit in not giving up, even after being put in an unfamiliar situation. If they want to challenge India in this final match of the series they must improve their batting performance in order to do so.
Bangladesh batting second
Bangladesh have proven themselves as a dangerous opponent and often thorn in the side of more dominant sides, and went into this Test determined to force a result – and did exactly that.
India bowled early and took full advantage of rain-dampened outfield conditions by attacking Bangladesh with relentless pace bowling, taking three wickets off Jasprit Bumrah alone during their first innings to ensure that Bangladesh never recovered their chances.
Mominul Haque and Jaker Ali attempted to fight back with fifties, but were never able to create any momentum. Meanwhile, Bangladesh’s lower order struggled with early movement of the ball as Soumya Sarkar fell in the first over and Litton Das soon thereafter; Towhid Hridoy only provided temporary respite before Bangladesh were ultimately beaten side.
Final Session (Day Four) – Visitors quickly succumbed as Alzarri Joseph took three wickets within one over from Hasan Mahmud before Shoriful Islam had to retire after being hit on the shoulder by another Joseph delivery and suffering an injury.
Bangladesh made an attempt to avoid collapse by employing their spinners in hopes of providing some stability, but their spinners could only provide limited relief as wickets continued to fall regularly. Zawad Abrar had given some hope but soon afterwards was caught off Ravindra Jadeja by Chetan Sharma for just two runs off Ravindra Jadeja’s bowling and it was all over for the defending champions.
India bowling first
India bowlers have done well to contain Bangladesh in the opening innings of this matchup. But, their opponents have experienced regular wicket losses; Mohammad Shihab James and Md Rizan Hossan continue adding runs to Bangladesh total which have already crossed 200 runs mark. India continues its pressure; Kiran Chormale came on for his third over and struck once more by getting rid of Zawad Abrar.
The visitors face a tall challenge: to make this match competitive they need to post a big total in their innings and that requires them to execute some stellar batting performances from their openers if they hope to reach the target. They have already begun well with their innings; now it is up to them to finish it successfully and close in on it!
Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant have both struck centuries, but have not provided visitors much comfort. Jasprit Bumrah continues to lead India’s bowlers as he has taken two wickets within three overs – providing plenty of hope that an Indian victory is imminent.
Bangladesh struggled in the middle overs after an impressive showing from their opening batsmen but were always on top of the game. Najmul Hossain Shanto and Tanzid Hasan Tamim remain at the crease but need to put in more of an effort if they wish to claim this match victory.
The hosts are in an advantageous position after scoring 515 runs in their first innings. To maintain any chance of victory in this match, they need a strong showing from Najmul Hossain Shanto, Tanzid Hasan Tamim, Parvez Hossain Emon and Towhid Hridoy as their leaders and hope they can provide some consolation wins before heading back home.
Bangladesh bowling second
After winning the toss and electing to bat first, Bangladesh struggled to settle their batters on an extremely tacky pitch. While a few batsmen reached half centuries, none managed to accelerate in scoring significantly more runs than was required.
Bangladesh were led by Mustafizur Rahman and Shoriful Islam who both collected wickets to contain India, but their bowling wasn’t powerful enough to combat an overwhelming Indian batting line-up.
Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahan combined for 25 fours and 22 sixes to propel India to 302/7 at the end of 40 overs, thanks to an innings-best 111 from Sanju Samson – second fastest Indian to 2500 runs in T20Is.
Bangladesh openers Mominul Haque and Shanto Shah were victimised by an effective India attack, with Mehidy Hasan Miraz suffering as a result of playing too many shots on an uneven pitch and Abhishek Sharma taking him at short midwicket for Abhishek Sharma to catch at short midwicket for short midwicket by Abhishek Sharma, followed by Litton Das, Najmul Hossain Shanto caught at long on and deep midwicket respectively before Towhid Hridoy couldn’t resist being struck down to join India.
