England’s batsmen struggled to score runs on a pitch which kept low and turned, until Jos Buttler struck an exquisite boundary to fine leg and gave England hope.
Rahul was caught at gully off Bumrah by Hartley as the tourists fell far short of their target. Foakes followed him back to the pavilion.
Day 1
England began their innings with gusto before succumbing to India’s spinner trio of Ashwin, Jadeja and Bumrah – Captain Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow managed a respectable total of 246 but their batting struggle will likely continue on day 2 at Stumps as spinners look to dominate once again.
India have taken an early lead of 35 runs after tea, and will look to close in on their target in the final session. Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja will continue batting at the top of their order.
England batsmen emerged much more comfortable during their second session after suffering through much of the first day on the losing side. Although they still needed to fight hard for every run, the ball was in great condition and helped their cause immensely. While this wicket may provide great conditions for batting initially, its final session could prove challenging as batsmen must remain patient as it may play slowly at times.
Jaiswal mirrors his partner’s shot through the covers – it looks nailed and will likely go for four until an excellent commitment from tourists Mark Wood saves two runs with an awesome dive saves them both runs! An exceptional effort by tourists!
Indian pair are playing it safe at the moment and that could explain their current lack of runs. Hartley played an excellent over with some poor balls thrown in; nevertheless, Indian pair are safe for now.
Kuldeep strikes again! Duckett attempted to play with power but ended up holing out to Shubman Gill at mid-on. Shubman Gill showed he has made adjustments in his game that allow him to face spinners with ease.
Root and Bairstow have done excellent work keeping England competitive on Day 2, sharing an unbroken stand of 47 so far.
Day 2
After an impressive start to the day, England’s batsmen found it hard to compete with India’s spinners but hope to build an advantage going into Tea.
Yashasvi Jaiswal achieved his maiden Test century and added 76 runs to India’s total; but an unnecessarily reckless slog sweep against debutant Tom Hartley resulted in Ahmed reaching deep midwicket to take out one run; had it not happened he may well have gone on to score one more century run.
Ravindra Jadeja continued to frustrate England batsmen with his leg break bowling. Additionally, Joe Root felt the impact of Ravindra Jadeja’s short deliveries which appeared to trap him LBW, though eventually the umpire decided NOT OUT after reviewing them carefully.
Jadeja then masterfully navigated a tricky spell with the new ball and was rewarded with a wicket – Ben Duckett from England was in particularly dangerous form as he effortlessly swept and reverse-swept Jadeja for 47.
KL Rahul and Shubman Gill both remained conservative in the middle, while Kohli appeared uneasy while having to negotiate with spinners carefully. Unfortunately he could not take advantage of extra bounce due to playing early.
England began the afternoon session steadily making progress toward their target, until Jasprit Bumrah made a breakthrough with an accurate fuller delivery that hit Ollie Pope on the pads, leading to him being given out leg before wicket and Jonny Bairstow becoming the new batsman. That brought an end to Pope’s brilliant innings – hard to replace in England’s top order – though their lead of 101 runs must now be protected, with Kohli needing strong support from his teammates if they hope to save this Test matchup tomorrow if they want a result against India if this game can still be saved!
Day 3
After an dismal first session, England batsmen enjoyed a strong start to the final session as they reached 219-8 at Tea. Unfortunately for them though, Ashwin, Axar and Jadeja continued their spin attack, as Ashwin ran through Joe Root’s lower order without him being caught out and kept them at bay despite Joe Root’s valiant efforts of scoring 84 not out to keep their hosts in contention.
WICKET! Bumrah managed to dismiss Hartley with one final over of play today. It seemed as if Hartley was trying for a quick run down the wicket but failed completely, before being hit into his back leg by Bumrah who delivered another knock-out blow! The ball then ricocheted off of it back leg into his stumps!
India are leading by 150 runs as Axar and Jadeja continue their work for India’s spin attack. England are struggling to stay with this Indian spin attack.
Kuldeep strikes again! Duckett attempts a sweep but fails and the ball hits his boot instead, prompting an appeal by English players but UltraEdge shows no edge to its shot.
India have struck an incredible blow. Foakes was hoping to build on his previous innings and bring England close to victory, yet has instead scored nothing and left England on 189-7. Now all hands must come together as they attempt to save the match!
Ashwin breaches Foakes’ defences, and England finds itself in deep trouble. To have any chance at all of salvaging this Test match, England requires a good performance with bat in final session.
India are making progress against Australia with Axar and Jadeja keeping up their scoring and increasing the lead beyond 200 runs.
Mark Wood strikes Jadeja for a six, with Yashasvi taking an easy catch at long on. England are in deep trouble as they struggle to put any kind of score on the board.
An impressive bowling performance by England has left their hosts reeling at Lunch, at 198-5 at Lunch they must improve with bat in second session to have any chance at saving this match and avoid whitewash against India at home. Unfortunately the first session was delayed by rain on Day Three but finally completed after 4 PM on Day Four.
Final Score
On Day Three of the fifth Test match at Dharamsala, India made short work of England’s innings after some early stumbles. Jos Buttler (23), Joe Root (34) and Jofra Archer (21) were the only English batsmen who managed to make any impactful contributions against India’s massive total scoreboard.
Rohit Sharma was in serious danger of calling off the match when he was dismissed for a duck on the first ball after tea break, but Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel came to India’s aid by adding 63 runs for seventh wicket and taking India past 400 with over 150 lead over its rival.
Ben Stokes brought the match to an abrupt halt when Jadeja was run out by an accurate throw from mid-on, leaving India with only few wickets remaining to chase a sizable target. Yet both partners held their nerve and played smart cricket, gradually moving closer towards reaching their target goal.
As the innings wore on at HPCA stadium in Dharamshala, Ravichandran Ashwin unleashed his outstanding spinner spell from Tamil Nadu – deceiving batters with slow deliveries to get Jos Buttler out for an idiosyncratic duck on just four balls post lunch break.
Ashwin strikes again when he bowls out Root with a delivery that bounces and spins away from him before landing neatly in Ben Foakes’ gloves at slip. England now find themselves struggling at 104 for 5, having batted through most of their afternoon session.
Hardik Pandya and Shivam Dube fell to Chris Jordan and Reece Topley respectively as their spinners continued their dominance during the third session, adding pressure to an already tenuous English side due to dropped catches and misfields that provided Indian bowlers lifelines despite some stumbles by English batsmen; nevertheless, Indian batsmen made light work of closing out their innings effortlessly and winning by an innings and wicket advantage.
