Mumbai Indians 192 for 7
Punjab Kings batsman Ashutosh Sharma provided a brilliant rearguard innings but their IPL campaign came up short against Mumbai Indians, losing by nine runs at Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium on Tuesday. While Sharma hit 28 balls to reach his half century of 61 runs it was not enough as their total was reduced to 183 all out after 19.1 overs and Jasprit Bumrah (3/21) and Gerald Coetzee (3/32) shared six wickets between them for Mumbai Indians.
Kagiso Rabada struck first for Mumbai Indians with an accurate bowling performance to remove opener Ishan Kishan in the third over. Later he picked up another wicket when Rohit Sharma hit sixes down the ground off Sam Curran off Rabada’s bowling.
Suryakumar Yadav led MI to victory with an innings of 78 off 53 balls, taking 23 balls to reach his 50 and still continuing his breathtaking strokeplay after reaching it – picking up fours and sixes with ease while picking off fours and sixes regularly along the way. Even once past this mark, Suryakumar continued sweeping, lofting, and whipping the ball with ease!
At 49-5 after eight overs, their run chase started off poorly for the hosts as Coetzee and Jasprit Bumrah put together an effective partnership of 33 runs for sixth wicket – just enough momentum for them to eventually gain some ground.
After the break, Coetzee struck quickly as he sent back Ashutosh Sharma for a duck in his first over. Sharma tried to pull an attempted short delivery but Mohammad Nabi caught it at deep midwicket for a single wicket dismissal.
Early in the powerplay, he hit Rabada for two fours and a six before also scoring against Curran with some fours including one off a slower ball from Curran which required review.
Punjab saw their fortunes unravel after Ashutosh Sharma fell victim to Hardik Pandya. Sharma failed to hit a straight one and was given out lbw after a review did not go his way; that same review could not be used against Pandya because he quickly dispatched Sharma from the following over. Harshal Patel had other plans, taking two key wickets of Tim David and Romario Shepherd in his final over. Additionally, Harshal used a great yorker delivery from him to get rid of Mohammad Nabi; later run-out ensued to give Mumbai Indians a decisive win – also cementing top spot on IPL table after seven wins out of eight games played this season! All that remains now for them to clinch it is to defeat Delhi Daredevils next match and secure top spot!
Punjab Kings 183 for 9
Punjab Kings batsmen made a valiant effort, but ultimately fell short in their pursuit of 192 runs. Meanwhile, Gerald Coetzee and Jasprit Bumrah took six wickets between them to give Mumbai Indians a much-needed win in this match.
Punjab managed to recover after an inauspicious start thanks to Ashutosh Sharma and Shashank Singh’s efforts, who both scored seven sixes between them to bring down their total from 77-6 in 9.2 overs and pose a formidable challenge that gave them a good chance at victory in this match.
Punjab began poorly, losing two wickets quickly to Gerald Coetzee’s first two overs as Prabhsimran Singh and Liam Livingstone fell. However, after that the Punjab team’s batting improved dramatically as they scored 40 runs during Powerplay to make a strong challenge to India’s position.
Ashutosh Sharma played an impressive innings for the Punjab Kings as he hit seven sixes during an unbeaten 61-ball innings, smashing most balls from pacer Akash Madhwal as his side reached an impressive total of 183 for nine.
Bumrah eventually dismissed him in the nineteenth over when he attempted to pull a short delivery and was caught off-guard by its pace, having it hit leg stump and brought an abrupt end to his innings.
Rabada successfully appeals for a leg before decision off Tilak Varma’s bowling in that same over, as it tracks outside rather than on his leg stump. After reviewing, Rabada was successful with his appeal as it shows that ball was tracking outside rather than against it.
Rohit Sharma struck Arshdeep Singh for six in the next over, moving up to 54/1 after three overs. But just one run later he was out when trying to pull short-and-wide deliveries from Arshdeep Singh – failing in which case Rohit was out.
Hardik Pandya came back into the match and took two wickets quickly in one over, including Ravi Bopara caught at deep midwicket and Mohammad Nabi caught by Ishan Kishan off Kagiso Rabada for eight off three balls, including four fours and a six from Kagiso Rabada for Kagiso Rabada for eight runs off three balls including four fours and a six from Rabada for an exciting victory for Mumbai Indians against Punjab Kings by nine runs; it was their fourth consecutive victory as they moved further up the table towards qualifying for play-off qualification as they maintained an excellent record against them prior to playing Kings XI Punjab again when meeting them again for their next home matchup against Kings XI Punjab on April 17th when facing them once more in another home fixture against Kings XI Punjab next time!
Mumbai Indians won by 9 runs
Mumbai Indians have an established track record as one of the premier teams in IPL cricket, having won five titles over time. While their first-choice seamers suffered injuries this year, veteran legspinner Piyush Chawla, young batsmen such as Nehal Wadhera and seamer Akash Madhwal quickly helped get back on track; ultimately helping the Mumbai Indians qualify for playoffs with ease.
Chawla was an integral member of Mumbai’s 2013 season and has continued his stellar form this year, taking 15 wickets in 16 matches and being one of the league’s most cost-efficient bowlers. He will prove invaluable in their final two matches against Delhi and Bengal.
Mumbai are in good form because they boast an extremely talented batting line-up, led by four batsmen capable of scoring runs under all conditions, but what makes this unit truly powerful is their impressive lower order which also delivers.
But their efforts weren’t enough against Punjab Kings as they were bowled out for 183 in 19.1 overs. Rising star Ashutosh Sharma played an outstanding 28-ball 61 to keep PBKS alive until the very last over.
Mumbai bowlers were impressive in reply, with Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah taking three wickets each, including Prabhsimran Singh caught at long-on off Coetzee in the second over before Bumrah got rid of Romario Shepherd with an accurate yorker to reduce their hosts to 92/3 after seven overs.
Ashutosh and Shashank Singh produced a late surge to help PBKS to an impressive total, yet was insufficient to prevent Mumbai from coming away with victory – their third win of the campaign now puts them into seventh spot on the table.
Mumbai Indians have put themselves in an excellent position to reach the playoffs as they currently possess the fourth-best net run rate and two more victories will propel them into fifth position. Their next match against Chennai Super Kings will take place on April 22.
This will be their 32nd meeting in IPL history and Mumbai Indians have won 17 times while Punjab have taken 15 victories so far. Their most recent match occurred during 2016 edition, where Mumbai Indians edged past Punjab by 20 runs and went top of table; Punjab were left in bottom half and needed a win to avoid relegation to Indian Premier League Qualifiers – both matches will be shown live by Star Sports India and Fox Sports Australia.
