Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings have been among the most dominant teams in IPL history, meeting four times in its finals to compete for glory – leading many fans to refer to their rivalry as an El Clasico of IPL.
CSK took control of their innings at Wankhede Stadium with Matthew Hayden’s aggressive 46-ball 81 and MS Dhoni’s 16-ball 30 cameo setting the pace, while MI struggled in their chase and eventually fell short by 20 runs.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Mumbai Indians have proven themselves among the most successful teams in Indian Premier League (IPL) history, winning five championship titles between them. Chennai Super Kings was established by India Cements Ltd and founded in 2008. Since 2008, they have won five IPL titles, reached 12 playoffs matches, and made 10 final appearances. This season, the Super Kings have won seven out of 11 matches played so far – four consecutively to remain second in the IPL table with 26 points and twice winning best-of-three playoffs. Dhoni and Suresh Raina lead their batting prowess alongside spinner Ravichandran Ashwin and Jadeja who add spin as needed to complete an effective bowling lineup.
In their first qualifier match against Sunrisers Hyderabad, the Super Kings won by 22 runs and in the final they overcame Mumbai Indians by 23. They scored 192/1 off 20 overs thanks to Michael Hussey and Raina’s unbeaten half centuries, before restricting opponents to just 144 in an impressive victory which marked their fourth IPL final appearance consecutively.
The Super Kings have had an outstanding start to this season’s Indian Premier League (IPL), with batsmen such as Ambati Rayudu and Shane Watson scoring plenty of runs. But their true success can be traced to Ashwin and Jadeja – two bowlers who have taken numerous wickets thus far and been key factors in helping their team secure crucial victories.
CSK vs MI
The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Mumbai Indians (MI) rivalry is one of the fiercest in Indian Premier League history. Over 37 matches played across both IPL and Champions League Twenty20 (CLT20) competitions between these teams has taken place, with MI edging CSK out slightly by winning 20 encounters against them; both have won five tournament titles each making them two of its most successful franchises in tournament history.
On Saturday, MS Dhoni and Mumbai will face off at MA Chidambaram Stadium. Dhoni’s side currently stand third while Mumbai are sixth. Their last encounter ended up without result due to rain; both teams will look for victory as a way to climb higher up the table.
MS Dhoni won the toss and decided to bat first, with Ambati Rayudu leading off for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) with an unbeaten 72 off 27 balls for CSK, Faf du Plessis and Moeen Ali also contributing significantly as their hosts reached 218 for four in their 20-over innings.
MI’s top order began the chase quickly and seemed poised for an easy victory; however, Quinton de Kock’s wicket put MI in trouble at 81 for three after 10 overs; however, West Indies international Devendra Bishoo took control with some powerful hitting; reaching his fifty off just 36 balls!
At this stage of the match, MI required 16 runs off their final over with Kieron Pollard on strike and facing Pathirana’s wide yorker for single off which it was run down successfully for one run; effectively ending MI’s chase of their target of 362.
The IPL final typically takes place at the home ground of its previous season’s winner, so MI and CSK’s encounter is particularly anticipated. This will mark their fourth meeting in an IPL final; MI has won all four meetings so far and also met in three semifinal matches during which MI triumphed each time.

After winning the toss, Mumbai Internationals decided to bat first at Wankhede Stadium – known as a batting paradise with short boundaries. MI’s opener Rohit Sharma and Tilak Varma made an excellent start, sharing an opening partnership of 70 runs in just seven overs before Pathirana dismisses both Varma and Pandya within quick succession. Unfortunately for MI, their chase eventually came tumbling down when Pathirana dismissed both men shortly afterwards.
MI’s lower order put forth an earnest effort, yet fell 20 runs short of reaching their target and remain second on the points table.
CSK made an impressive start by amassing 246/5 in 20 overs thanks to an outstanding 152-run partnership between Vijay and Albie Morkel that set them up perfectly to dominate this match.
The match became a low-scoring contest as both teams failed to score runs in the latter overs. Only MS Dhoni managed to save CSK from an overwhelming defeat.
CSK have now won five consecutive matches against Mumbai Indians and moved up to second in the points table with 14 points, giving them a better chance at making it into the playoffs (they lead Delhi Capitals by two). CSK have also claimed their first victory away from home this season – its victory also being their inaugural away win this year! In their next matches against Sunrisers Hyderabad and Rajasthan Royals before hosting KXIP for an important clash on April 28 that could prove decisive in terms of qualification for playoffs; Star Sports will broadcast live coverage.
Mumbai Indians vs Chennai Super Kings
Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings have long been two of the premier franchises in Indian Premier League (IPL). After 37 matches against each other, with Mumbai being victorious more often (20 wins compared to 17), and boasting one of IPL’s fiercest rivalries.
CSK and MI’s rivalry was ignited with their inaugural match at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chepauk. CSK batsmen led by Matthew Hayden’s 46-ball 81 and Suresh Raina’s 53-ball cameo helped their side score an astonishing total of 208 for five in their opening innings.
MI batsmen found it hard to post an impressive total and found themselves reeling at 68/3 after 12 overs, but thanks to captain Rohit Sharma’s 62-ball 83 and Suryakumar Yadav’s 16-ball 30 they rallied from the lowly start and posted an admirable total of 168/6 at 20 overs despite CSK bowlers’ late surge and narrow loss by six runs – winning them their inaugural IPL title!
